[Over Seventy years ago, humanity came to learn of a massive new star within their galaxy. Its appearance was as sudden as it was unexpected, causing many countries around the world to move, desperate to study it. Each one wishing to be the first to unveil its mysteries, gaining the rights to name it.]

Within multiple countries around the world, facilities from each nation were filled to the brim with their country's greatest minds. Scientists were busy rushing back and forth, some gathered around a massive telescope, its design varied between the various nations. Computer screens showed the image of the new star centered on the screen, surrounding. The individuals manning the telescopes adjusted it accordingly, taking their time to gain a good image of it. Next to the star on the screen were a series of numbers, rapidly moving in flux as the telescope was adjusted. These numbers reflected the distance of the star from the planet, the scope of the star, as well as the radiation from the star.

[In their efforts and studies they learned that the star was radiating a strange energy, one that didn't register with anything they were familiar with or had ever come across. The implications of this were astonishing, and further roused the nations race to lay claim to the star, each one hoping to somehow harness this energy or their own desires and purposes. However, try as they might none of their Satellites, rockets or other devices were able to draw close enough to the star to gather a sample. Try as they might, their repeated efforts all end in failure, and it seemed it was all in vain....until it wasn't.]

The various computer screens illuminated the lab in red light, warnings flashing repeatedly on the screens. They stared in disbelief before rushing to reset, fingers tapped away at the various keys as they ran a number of simulations and calculations. They checked the numbers, then checked them again. Each time that same blaring alarm went off. Sweat trickled on their brow, some dropped to their knees as the realization of what they had learned the first time began to settle in, pushing aside the denial that they had wrestled with for so long. They stared at one another, and gathered the data, presenting it to their respective nation's leaders. They reaffirmed that the information was accurate, and for perhaps the first time, the leaders were all of similar mind; they had to tell the people.

[The scientists from the various nations had come to the same conclusion; the new star was on the verge of going Supernova. Due to its proximity to Earth, the explosion from the star's death would wipe out nearly all life on the planet...and, perhaps the planet itself.]

With news of what was essentially, the end of the world panic struck the people. The larger cities were in mayhem, cars crashing into one another as they desperately sought to leave, looting was prevalent within the stores from those seeking survival by any means. In various Universities and Institutions scholars and professors stood before those gathered to listen to the seminar, scribbles and numbers shown on the whiteboard reflecting their own theories and calculations. In the churches and synagogues people knelt as they all prayed fervently, tears streaming and trickling down their faces. Outside in the forests, fields and valleys were those who sat in circles holding hands, and swaying as music was played. Each person, every group reflecting and coping in their own ways, based on their own beliefs.

[Regardless of their divided beliefs and religions, everyone had come to a united conclusion. It had long since been known that humans had done damage to the planet, much of which was irreparable. They believed this was retribution for what they had done to Earth, man was a disease to it. This strange star that had arrived would rid the Earth of the disease that had plagued it for so long, the disease known as humanity. And so the world united had collectively agreed that the name of the star would be Panacea; the remedy for all diseases.]

With their inevitable destruction on the horizon, time seemed to blur by for them. Seconds sped into minutes, minutes into hours, hours into days, days into weeks, weeks to months and months to years. The seasons changed like the turning of the page, Spring flipping into Summer, and Summer to Fall, then fall to Winter. As time passed the various scientists and engineers gathered together, fashioning a massive clock onto the highest structure within the respective nations. This Doom's day clock operated based on the star's calculated death, and began counting down.

[With every month and every year, the readings from Panacea grew stronger and more unstable. As these numbers grew higher, humanity's end drew closer. The people regularly checked and watched the clock, the numbers dwindling down by the hour, minute, and second each day, counting down to their inevitable end until it would finally reach 0.]

With the clock reading 00:20 people from all over were gathered around the building that housed the Doomsday clock. Hands clasped together, cell phones out, weeping, murmurings, prayers all meshed together, forming a cacophony of noises. At ten seconds they counted down together, eyes tightly shut before finally reaching 0. There was a bright and blinding flash from the sky along with a thunderous roar, in this moment it seemed to be day time for the entire world. Slowly the light began to dim and night returned to those in their respective hemisphere, the power throughout the world all shut off. People stared into the sky in disbelief, then at one another. Were the calculations off? They waited uncertain, night crawling into day for some, and day into night for others. Aside from the power outage there was nothing, no destruction, no death. Scientists shook hands as they celebrated within their labs, those in churches and synagogues hugged one another tightly with tears of gratitude in their eyes, along with families in their respective homes.

[Panacea's destruction was confirmed, yet with its end came only a massive power outage. Various hospitals and facilities had relied on backup generators that were used for such cases. The power outage lasted for only several hours and while there was civil unrest, people everywhere were relieved they were able to live to see another day. The world could finally breathe a sigh of relief. The promise of tomorrow that they believed had been taken from them, had been returned. They had survived...and for that, they were all grateful.]

[A year later....]

Around the world normalcy had returned to the people. Within the busy cities the streets were crowded, horns honking from the nuisance of delayed traffic, lines were formed by vending machines and food trucks. Couples were on dates at the various cafes, bars and lounges, people filled the seats of theaters. Some swam at the pool, others at beaches. Everyone indulging in their own lives, their own hobbies and vices. One was hard pressed to believe that these places once ran rampant with people in distress.

[A year later, on the eve of what had once been believed to be the end of all life on the planet, something unexpected happened around the world.]

Within one of the movie theaters, as people laughed at the scene of the film a woman's body had ignited into flame. The scene was immediately noticed in the dark theater causing alarm. Some attempted to put the fire out in an effort to help her, but found the flames would not douse. The woman screamed not from pain, but fear and panic. In a pool a man doing laps in the water with his friends is caught off guard as the water began to freeze over. Many began to rush out the water, some were less fortunate. At a café, someone sitting at a table began to twist and expand as their body morphed into a more monstrous form. News anchors around the world were reporting similar stories taking place in foreign nations. Behind them were various scenes, showing chaos in the streets.

[People around the world began transforming, displaying strange and frightening abilities. There was no set pattern to the emergence of abilities in individuals, no signs or indication as to who would be affected. It was a phenomenon that caused the world governments to convene together to address the situation with these super powered individuals, these Outliers.]

Within a lecture hall standing before NATO representatives, were a small team of scientists. A projector was running, displaying on a massive screen was a outline of a human body, along with a DNA helix next to it. Numbers and information cascaded along the screen near the diagrams reflecting what they had learned as they began their presentation and explanation of the situation.

[From various studies and tests being run the scientists had determined that a similar reading from Panacea could be found in these enhanced individuals. They had concluded that Panacea's explosion caused its energy to seep into the earth and those on it, the energy reflecting individuals differently. These strange abilities were officially called Variants and the people possessing them Outliers. This changed the world as everyone knew it.]

[Prism City]

Prism City, a large and bustling metropolitan area. Its structures were a spectacle to behold, bright and vibrant, and its people a melting pot of various cultures and races, from around the world gathered together. At the heart of the city was the tallest structure within the city, a building that held a prism like shape. As the sun rose and at its height, the light would strike the building in such a way that a kaleidoscope of colors constantly danced throughout the city, a beautiful and natural spectacle. Currently, two heroes faced off against a Kaiju-like creature along with a mutated man holding a large muscular frame, bone-like spikes protruding from his shoulders, spin and knuckles. The brave heroes facing off against these foes appeared tired, their colorful costumes torn and ripped as they fought valiantly.

[In Prism City, there were two of the world's greatest heroes who had been operating in the city for years, protecting it and the world. They were a husband wife duo known as Apex and Foresight. The duo were largely successful, overcoming nearly every obstacle they faced. It seemed as if nothing could stop them, that is until the various villains had gathered together to wage war against the heroes.]

Many buildings were destroyed, along with the streets. The heroes were knocked through various buildings that toppled over in the wake of their passing, their bodies skidding along the ground. Slowly a crowd of those they had been fighting formed around their ragged forms, blood spilling from them, their suits nearly torn to shreds. The crowd around them closed in on the two until their bodies had disappeared beneath them, attack after attacked launched against the unmoving heroes. Five years had passed since that fateful day, the city had been repaired physically. At the heart of the city, near Prism Tower was a statue of Apex and Foresight with a plaque lay at the foot of the statue.

[The war against Apex and Foresight had lasted a full day before coming to an end. It was a fierce battle that ended with their deaths. The city mourned the loss of its heroes, saddened by their deaths and also frightened by what their absence meant. The villains had become organized, separate in their own desires, yet organized all the same. It was an act that forced the government to form their own group of super powered individuals in response to this new and growing threat. These new heroes would fill in the gap of their former protectors.]

[Present Day]

High in the sky, well above Prism City a tear appears in the air, widening as it reveals a glowing wormhole, swirling colors visible within this strange anomaly. It lingers there for seconds before something is jettisoned from the spatial rip. Once just a blur, the falling silhouette takes on a more human shape as it draws closer towards the ground like a comet. People going about their day jump in fear and surprise from a sudden and violent crash. A trail is carved out f the road leading towards a massive crater meters ahead of the statue of Apex and Foresight. Dust and debris lingers heavily in that area, people gathering around the crater, curiosity overriding their fear, like needing to stop to gaze upon a car crash or some other disaster. The crowd forms around the crater, dust and debris lingering from the crater as a groan can be heard from it. A dark gloved hand reaches out from the depths of the crater, gripping the edge of the crater as the rest of the body is revealed, the man pulling himself from the depths. The people startled, gasp, some turn and flee while others merely take dozens of steps back from this stranger. The man crouches down on one knee at the foot of the statue, head lowered as he steadies his breathing. The man dressed in a strange uniform colored purple and black with hints of gold, ripped and torn in several places, a domino mask resting on his face.

"Ugh! Just how far did I get knocked away?"

The man, having somewhat gathered his bearings looks up, squinting his eyes from the glare of the sun. His eyes adjust to the light and he notices the statue before him. The plaque catches his eyes and he moves to read it, lips following as he reads; In Memory of the city's greatest heroes, Apex and Foresight. His eyes widen as he looks back up to the statue.

"What-just what is-"

"Just who are you and what are you doing here?"

Frozen in disbelief the stranger finds the light obscured, a shadow cast over him from behind. The voice of a man questioning him, drawing the stranger's attention. The stranger rises to his feet, and gazes at the owner of the voice from over his shoulder. Five costumed individuals reside behind him, three of them floating in the air. The stranger turns to face them, hands balled into tightly clenched fists.

"Who am I? Who are YOU?! And what sort of sick joke is this?!"

The stranger's neck is strained as he shouts out in anger. The man who had spoke to the stranger was dressed in white and gold, a golden cape flowing behind him. He stares down at this stranger, eyes begin to glow and burn with a golden energy, unfolding his arms from over his chest.

"I said, Who. Are. You? Don't make me ask again."

The stranger clenches his teeth, a violet glow surrounds his body, as his eyes glow with a similar vibrant hue.

"That's my line. Don't threaten me....EVER! Now, answer. My. Question!"

The two stare at one another, the hostility between them palpable.

"Um, Limitless. This is rather strange."

A new voice, almost mechanical in nature calls out to the man now addressed as Limitless. This man was dressed in green and black, faced hidden behind a helmet with a green visor like covering. Green grid like symbols coursed throughout the suit. The stranger and Limitless break their gaze, both turning to look at the one who spoke as he stares at a holographic screen on his wrist.

"I did a scan of our friend here during your riveting discussion. These readings indicate that this man before us...is Apex."

The other four that accompanied him, Limitless included stare in shock and disbelief at this news. The stranger, this other Apex having overheard this stands with arms folded. He tilts his head, sucking his teeth in annoyance as he stares at the group.

"Of course I am. Now answer my questions. Who are you people? Why does it say I'm dead? And just why am I next to HER?!"

The group looks to one another, those that had been hovering in the air lower themselves to stand on the ground. They seem uncertain, Limitless stepping towards the man who voiced this revelation turning his back towards the other Apex. He lowers his voice as he begins to speak to the man.

"What's going on Update? How is he alive? And why does he seem...confused?"

"Perhaps he was brought back to life by someone's variant, and the reanimation process affected his memories?"

A gloved hand finds its way on Limitless's shoulder, gripping tightly.

"Nu uh. You're not going to ignore me for your private little meeting. Now talk! What's going on here?"

Limitless turns, eyes narrowing as he glares at Apex, eyes burning a golden glow. He stares before his expression softens, the glow fading from his eyes. A sympathetic gaze falls upon the confused yet angry Apex. He closes his eyes and takes a breath before opening them again.

"Apex, you...you died. You've been dead for years."

Silence rests upon them, the other heroes staring at Apex who stares at Limitless who lifts a brow at this information. He says nothing, does nothing for what feels like forever before finally...he breaks out in laughter. He grips his side as he laughs hysterically. The heroes shift their gazes to one another before something else steals their attention. Multiple Humvees pull into the area coming to a sudden stop. Doors open up, the letters STF emblazoned on each door in blue. from the vehicles, individuals dressed in blue and black, body armor covering them and armed with firearms surround the area of the costumed heroes. In the air above them, the sound of a helicopter can be heard before it comes into view. The helicopter begins to descend before finally landing on the ground at a distance. A middle aged white man, dressed in a blue suit, with a blue collared shirt and black tie steps out from the copter, a pair of dark glasses resting on his face. He approaches the heroes, stopping next to Limitless.

"Anyone care to explain what all of...this is?"

The man asks, head motioning towards the destruction brought about by Apex's crash landing. Apex points towards the new arrival with his thumb as he addresses Limitless as if the new man couldn't hear him.

"Who's the suit and his little entourage?"

The man known as Update moves between Apex and the man in a suit, his back towards Apex as he catches the man up with what they had learned.

"Sir, that gentleman over there is Apex. THE Apex. I did a biometric scan of his body to confirm this. He...doesn't seem to remember anything though."

Like the heroes from before, the man stares in disbelief. His hand raises, removing the shades from his face revealing his hazel eyes. The man looks at Update, then stares over towards Apex from over his shoulder, then back to Update.

"Are you sure? Any chance he's..iunno, some type of clone or something? A fake?"

Update can only shake his head at first in response.

"While it isn't impossible that he could be a clone, the likelihood based on these readings is less than 1%. I believe some yet unknown individual possesses a variant that was used to resurrect him. Perhaps they or their powers are still immature, resulting in fractures in his memories."

The man stares at Apex, who in turn stares back at him. The two lock eyes, eyes narrowing as their gaze intensifies. Finally, the suited man steps around Update towards Apex to stand directly before him. Silence still lingers between them before he extends his hand towards the hero.

"Apex, its an honor to see you alive and well Sir. I believe you have some questions. Come with me, and lets see if we can shed some light on some things for you."

Apex stares at the man, then down at the hand before locking eyes with him once more. He doesn't respond, not at first at least. Everyone stares, uncertain as to what will happen, how Apex will react when they see him take the man's hand in his own, accepting the handshake.

[Elsewhere...]

Presumably miles away from the city is what can only be described as a military site. Various vehicles similar to the Humvees that had arrived in Prism City are parked within the fenced in facility. Various individuals train, some running laps around the site while others are seen in formations before commanding officers, all dressed in black and blue, STF on the the front of the shirts over the left breast. Within the base the man in a suit is seen walking through the halls, accompanied by Apex who walks beside him with Limitless and Update towing behind. As they walk, the man hands Apex a folder filled with various papers.

"You've been dead Apex, for about five years now. You and your wife, Foresight fell at the hands of a multitude of some real nasty characters."

"My WHO?!"

The man doesn't respond to Apex's confusion as the two round a corner, passing scientists who walk past them and soldiers standing guard.

"Your wife Apex, try to keep up son."

"Don't call me so-"

They approach metal double doors, the man placing his hand against a spot on the wall near the door, a green laser scans his retinas. The doors open, granting access to the group, a robotic voice welcoming them: Welcome Colonel Steele... They step into a massive war room, multiple individuals seated at desks with holographic screens, while at the end of the room was a massive super computer.

"With you and your wife dead we had to accelerate the program for the Stabilist Task Force, or the S.T.F. Operatives, resources, equipment gathered for the sole purpose of dealing with the growing super powered threats. To try and get things back under control."

The Colonel approaches the massive computer, in doing so as if responding to his approach the computer hums to life, multiple images rapidly scrolled through the screen before finally five various images remain. The images shown reflect the five individuals that had arrived on the scene at Apex's arrival.

"Still, as effective as it was, it simply wasn't enough. Plus, the reality is the world had become accustomed to their idea of heroes, which wasn't men and women in military uniforms anymore. So, we needed some costumed heroes of our own, I believe you met them already."

The colonel motions to the folder in Apex's hand, encouraging him to open it. Apex opens the folder and finds files within it, files regarding the same individuals currently on the screen. The first file was of the man named Limitless.

"Henry Mathis, also known as Limitless. Publicly he is the first member of the team, and serves as its leader. The man is believed to be able to hit as hard as you did in your hay day Apex. He can fly, take a beating, and seems to possess an inexhaustible supply of energy, energy that he can use to heal himself as well as alter it to meet his needs. There are limitless applications to which he can use it, or at least so he says."

Apex scans the information shown in the file, studying it silently, his expression even with the mask on shown shifting subtly here and there. He said nothing as he read, simply moving onto the next file once he was finished. This file showed the man that was addressed as Update.

"I said Limitless was publicly the first known member. Well, Kevin Donners, also known as Update is the actual first member. A member of the S.T.F, Donner's body seems composed of nanites. He can alter his body to form virtually any weapon or technological object. He can integrate with any form of technology or machinery, and is a genius who makes Einstein look like he rides the short bus and licks windows."

Apex stares intently at the man's file, still silent even up to this point. He offers no words of surprise or disapproval, merely taking in the information presented to him. When finished he moves onto the next file and is presented with the image of a woman.

"Victoria Summer, still not certain if that's even her real name. She goes by Power Force, and that's saying a mouthful. The lady's got it all; super strength, speed, and durability. She can fly, and not only can she release blasts of energy, she can absorb energy, even kinetic energy from blows as well. If that wasn't enough, from what she says and what we can tell...the broad's immortal! She may not look it, but she's old enough to be your grandma. Ha! She's old enough to be MY mom."

Shifting to the next file his eyes land on a man who's face is obscured by a golden featureless helmet, or so it seemed.

"Ugh, Mark Armstrum, the Midasian. One of the richest man in the world, though don't tell him that. He prefers to be called THE richest. The man can encase his body in gold, lets him hit harder and take hits like a tank on steroids. Like King Midas himself, he can convert whatever he touches into gold. Man takes it a step further though, converting things to silver, and crystal as well, nearly any valuable metal or mineral you name it he can make it. Comes in handy helping to fund our little project here. A fact he loves reminding us of. If that wasn't enough, the annoying prick is criminally lucky."

Apex turns over, landing on the final file within the folder. The picture attached to the file is a woman, younger than all the other members.

"Cassandra Rusche, our newest and youngest member. She goes by Rush, the kid's got talent, one of the fastest individuals I've ever seen. The girl can run laps around you, me and the world twice over before you could finish a glass of water. Got a strong sense of justice that one, a true bleeding heart."

Closing the folder, Apex looks up from the file as he stares at the Colonel who moves to stand in front of the computer with Limitless and Update standing at his side.

"Together, they form a singular team, the Fold. They are the city's foremost defense against the machinations of evil around the world. Especially when dealing with the Trihorn Syndicate."

"I'm sorry, the WHAT?"

Apex stares in confusion, it was clear the name of this group was as foreign to him as The Fold were. Colonel Steele opens his mouth to speak, Limitless's hand on his shoulder stops him. The team leader steps forward to address Apex.

"The Trihorn Syndicate is a group of three powerful villainous Outliers. They're a criminal organization with their hands running throughout this city and the world. War, drugs, human trafficking, if its illegal and makes money, you can find their hand somewhere in the pot. And they..."

His voice trails off as he grows silent, averting his gaze from the man before him. Whatever he was going to say, he couldn't bring himself to actually say it.

"And it is believed that they are the ones behind the incident that resulted in you and your wife's deaths."

Update steps forward, voicing the words that Limitless withheld. Both Limitless and Colonel Steele stand there in awkward silence. Apex folds his arms, gripping his chin as delves in thought. He had gained a lot of information, and was processing everything that had been told to him and that was going on. They stared at Apex, uncertain as to what he was thinking, what he was feeling having heard such news.

"I can provide you what we know about them which, isn't a lot if I'm being honest. With things as they are what do you plan to do? If you want, you could join the team, you know as you get your bearings."

Apex looks up at Steele, then at Limitless and Update.

Apex soars through the air, flying away from the base, Colonel Steele and Limitless on the ground watching as he leaves.

"Figured he'd decline. Even with his memory gone, some things never change."

"And you're certain it is still there?"

"Yea, its still there, untouched."

The conversation between the two was as odd as it was vague. Once Apex was well beyond their view they turned around, heading back inside the compound.

-

"So, I'm in another world huh. And the me of this world got killed, go figure."

The world around him was a blur as soared through the skies, pondering on the fact he was in a world that was not his own. While it wasn't him that was killed it was still a version of him. Learning of his death didn't feel good, he gritted his teeth in frustration. He returns to Prism City flying into one of many buildings. Apparently this was where the him of this world operated out of, he didn't know how to feel about some government suits knowing this.

"Just how did I get knocked here? Was it intentional, or an accident? I'll have to run some tests and simulations, see if there's a way to get back. But, until then-"

He removes his mask, walking over to a work desk with a picture resting on it. He reaches out picking up the picture frame, blowing the dust off it he gazes at it, a mix of emotions washing over his face. He closed his eyes, settling his thoughts and feelings.

"-I should get to know myself a bit better. Lets get acquainted now, Erik Turner of this world."

Lost and trapped in a new world not his own, is there a way for him to return to where he came from? Or, is he forever trapped in this strange and distant land, so different yet so similar to his own?
