HISTORY
A sister city to Hexington, once a simple port settlement, during the 1300's the Bubonic Plague, also known as the Black Death struck the city harder than any other location. It was a dark time where districts were walled off to quarantine the sick, or subsequently burned down in an attempt to destroy the disease. It is a time where there were more graves than homes and people. During the 1600's when the City of Hexington was founded and word of the city being cursed began to spread, the history of Blackhaven became intertwined with the stories of Hexington's curse, due to the proximity of the two cities.
As time progressed and the plague had subsided, becoming little more than a dark stain on the history of the once small settlement, Doctors and physicians who had gathered in an effort to combat the various diseases that still plagued the town, combined their efforts slowly transforming the town's reputation. People would travel to Blackhaven to be treated by Doctors who held even a slight level of prominence. By the 19th and 20th Century, the town that was once a place of disaster, sickness and death had become a thriving city, and global hub for hospitals, universities, and medical research. Rather than disease and death, the city had now become known for medicine and healing; famous for its hospitals, pharmaceutical corporations, and biotech research labs.
Despite its sterile reputation, the city had traded one disease for another. The medical institutions revered for saving lives being the very sources of greed and corruption. It is corruption that seeps into every corner of the city, from the legal system to the hospitals and other groups and organizations. While unspoken, it is common knowledge that Blackhaven suffers from a drug problem, as both illicit street drugs and clinical pharmaceuticals are pushed into homes and the streets by various gangs backed by corporations. People, specifically the poor and middle class are used as guinea pigs for drugs, while the rich are protected within the cleaner more sterile districts and neighborhoods—safe from disease, sickness and legal consequences.
