Erik Turner is a man of many hats. Chief Engineer at Axxis Corp, husband to Marie Turner, and an Outlier. His powers awakened at a young age, though after an incident nearly costing him both his freedom and life he had chose to go about life as a normal human. During the incident at Prism City Medical Center (PCMC) that caused the loss of his and his wife's unborn child due to the villainous Outliers while members of The Fold were otherwise engaged elsewhere, he decided to use his powers to become a hero for Prism City alongside his wife, taking the name Apex.


PERSONALITY

As a child Erik was generally bright and extremely energetic. As he grew older he began to become more quiet and reserved, moreso after the incident where he and Marie met. While not paranoid, Erik had grown cold, distant and rarely ever smiled. Despite his quiet nature, Erik is extremely confident in both himself and his abilities. There is also a rage that resides within him, a fact he became aware of early on, something he consciously keeps in check, an act made easier by his relationship with Marie. Before becoming Apex he took up engineering as a means of channeling his focus and rage into inventing and developing. With his enhanced intelligence and all that bottled up anger of his it made him extremely productive. Those that know him while all regarding him highly, they admit he is rather reclusive and that they truly don't know much about him. Erik never truly talks about himself, or his hobbies. This is of course intentional, a means of protecting both himself and his family.

While he is quiet, focused and hardworking at work, when with his family or close friends he appears to openly laugh and smile more, Marie commenting how genuine it is compared to the laughs he gives in social settings regarding his colleagues at work. After the loss of their child, Erik's rage became even stronger to the point simply inventing wouldn't be enough to channel it. He took to a costume and hero persona as a means to help people true, but that is only part of it. In reality, it is also a means of channeling both his grief and anger, something that becomes apparent when battling criminals and villains where the level of violence used against them nearly goes too far, as there are several cases where he has stopped just shy of murder. He constantly assures his wife he would never go that far, having stated that he needs to do at least that much to instill true fear into their hearts to prevent them from acting out again. These are just words, while not untrue as he does wish for them to be so, they are not the truth. Erik understands that if Marie was not there, there's no telling what he would do. This level of objectivity and self reflection helps to tether him, keeping him somewhat grounded as he truly does wish to do good and protect others.


POWERS & ATTRIBUTES

  • Tactile Telekinesis: Erik's variant manifested in the form of telekinesis. Initially he simply applied it remotely via lifting and pushing items and people (though the latter weren't lifted by much given his inexperience). Over the years his abilities with his telekinesis have become incredibly advanced. Where he was once only able to use his abilities outwardly, he has managed to create and maintain a telekinetic membrane of sorts around his persons. This produces the illusion that he possesses a different variant in the form of super strength and durability, as well as super speed, and flight. Erik is able to subconsciously maintain this field or erect it reflexively. His ability to affect people and things around him telekinetically has increased as well, able to move both large and miniature objects with surgical precision and efficiency.
  • Telekinetic Superhuman Strength: Through the usage of the telekinetic membrane surrounding him, Erik is able to lift nearly anything he can perceive with no discernible limit. This is mostly due to the fact that it is not Erik himself physically exerting strength but rather the object in question being affected by his telekinesis. When lifting large objects they do not crumble, bend or buckle under their own weight thanks to the field surrounding them. In the same sense that he is able to lift whatever, under the same umbrella he is able to toss them effortlessly as well, sending them hurtling for miles, and is able to punch physically powerful individuals, those actually possessing superhuman strength and invulnerability with blows that they are able to feel.
  • Telekinetic Flight: Using his telekinesis to lift and propel himself, Erik is able to use a form of psuedo-flight, traveling through the air at mach speeds. Because of the field surrounding him he isn't affected by things like air friction or the such. According to Erik, if he so desired, he could travel through space without a problem, as his TK field would protect him within the vacuum of space.
  • Invisibility: By using his telekinesis to "grab" and bend light around him, Erik is able to render himself virtually invisible. Erik has found that trying to multi-task with his telekinesis while invisible makes maintaining the invisibility difficult.
  • Telekinetic Force-Field: The field surrounding him at nearly all times acts as a natural forcefield against things like bullets, shrapnel, other projectiles along with the force from explosions as well. This field serves well against both physical attacks and matter and energy as well. Erik is able to expand this field or erect another around an area with similar results, though the larger the field created the more effort he must put in to maintain and enforce it. Though he hasn't had to do so, through running a digital simulation, Erik has surmised that while he could erect a field around the entirety of Prism City, it would be imperfect. When intensified the field becomes visible in the form of a light purple or violet aura.
  • Telekinetic Force Blasts: Through the use of his telekinesis, Erik is able to launch concussive blasts of varying degrees. These blasts can be emitted from either his hands or his eyes, the power behind them based on Erik's efforts and will. Like his aura, these blasts are generally Violet or light purple in color.
  • Telekinetic Super Hearing: Using his telekinesis, he is able to funnel sound, focusing and enhancing his hearing, an ability that works even through things like walls and glass.
  • Enhanced Senses: Erik is able to perceive anything and everything he is in contact with. While standing on the ground, he is able to perceive whatever is on it, even things distant from him, and by touch or walking through a building he can perceive everything and everyone in it. Erik likens the ability to a form of echolocation almost, his telekinesis mapping out the area, and outlining the various objects and individuals. Erik is able to focus this ability, selectively choosing how far out he wishes to see, and what room or building floor he wants to focus on. So far it is determined that he is able to see throughout Prism City if he so chooses to, though he has not attempted to extended this ability further.

ABILITIES
  • Hand-to-Hand Combat (Advanced): During his senior year in high school, and from college up Erik took up various self defense classes, adopting a mesh of fighting styles to better protect himself and Marie, especially should something happen to block his powers. It is a skill that is further augmented by his telekinetic super strength.
  • Enhanced Intellect: It is believed that his telekinetic Variant is a byproduct of his enhanced mind, or at least somehow intrinsically linked to it. Erik is incredibly intelligent

PARAPHERNALIA

  • Apex Suit: Erik's suit was developed using resources from his lab at Axxis Corp. It uses a mesh weave of superium, a failsafe to further protect him should his telekinetic field be breached or if he should have to extend it outward or expand it, weakening it and exposing himself to harm. Its self repairing capabilities is made to prevent having to make multiple copies and thus drawing suspicion. A the center of the suit is his signature golden A made from synthetic primordium. It is a secret weapon, temporarily amplifying his abilities by many folds, though admittedly to a less degree of natural and pure primordion.


HISTORY

Early Life​

Erik grew up in a loving family, son to Melvin and Michelle Turner, and his two sisters Trine and Ava Turner. By the time of his and his sisters births, Variants had already surfaced and spread across the planet, making waves in many cities, states and nations. As a lover of comic books and super heroes, Erik had hoped and prayed every day and night that he would receive a variant as well, fantasizing about a life of super heroism. It is a wish that his father tried heavily to dissuade him from, warning him that nothing good will come from becoming a target of others or the government. His father's warnings fell on deaf ears, with Erik being far too wrapped up in his fantasies to realize the reality of his father's warning. Even as friends from the neighborhood began randomly and oddly moving without a word, while saddened by the loss of a friend or two Erik thought nothing more of it. Finally, on Erik's 13th Birthday his wish had been answered in the form of his variant surfacing at midnight.

Teenage Years​

At Sixteen years old, Erik has had his Variant for at least three years. While initially excited and eager to share the news with his family, he recalled his father's lack of zeal towards his dream of gaining super powers and opted to keep his abilities a secret. Eager to jump into the world of heroism and stopping crime, Erik realized that he truly didn't know much of anything about his abilities and so in his spare time after school, he would rush towards the old scrap yard to practice with his abilities. His parents had noticed that he was getting out more and had also stopped mentioning about wanting to gain powers, perceiving that he had simply grown out of that phase and was growing up. Every day Erik felt himself growing stronger, better at controlling his abilities causing his thirst for improvement to only grow further. Late at night in his bedroom, rather sleeping he'd work on fine tuning and refining his control, lifting and manipulating items of varying size and weight in his bedroom. These late nights often caused him to fall asleep in school, something that would place him at odds with his teachers from time to time. Despite dozing off, his grades were rather exceptional, rarely ever dropping down to a B in his classes.

Confident in himself he chose to finally make his debut as a hero. To grant him plenty of time to do what he needed while also avoiding making his parent's suspicious, Erik told them he would be staying at a friend's house for the night. Given his grades (despite the calls they got regarding him falling asleep in class) he was allowed to. Erik waited until it had become night, dawning a thrown together outfit t serve as his superhero suit he went out looking for crime to thwart, and found it. Venturing into the shady Pewter Valley, he found a family being harassed by some local street thugs. Excited he jumped out, using his abilities to slam the thugs into a wall from a distance. Rather being thankful the family appeared frightened of Erik, confusing the boy. Realizing he was one of those individuals the government were calling Outliers, both the thugs and the family scattered. Perplexed Erik began walking back to where he was hiding out until tomorrow, unaware that at some point he was being followed. By the time he did realize it was too late, and all he could see is black.


When he woke up Erik found himself in an unfamiliar place, strapped to a table with his wrists and ankles bound. He'd been abducted, and worst of all, he couldn't use his powers. Across from him he noticed several others, bound in a similar fashion to him, and he realized that they too must have had powers. A voice came over an intercom, explaining that they were all deemed dangerous, too dangerous to be out and about unattended. The facility they were in belonged to some clandestine group called "The Balancers" a group that would later become known as The Stabilists Task Force. They had apparently been doing this for some time, sanctioned by the government for the safety of mankind. It is then that Erik recalled his friends that had mysteriously moved without warning, and his father's words of warning resurfaced. This is what he meant, what he and his mother feared would happen. Regretting being so foolish, while a teenager he felt like a small boy, eager for the comfort of his family once more. Next to him was a hispanic girl, she said her name was Marie Diez. Seeing the fear and pain he was feeling, despite being in the same situation she still sought to comfort him.

The facility they were in seemed to be a mobile one, and while in transit to wherever they were being taken to the facility was attacked by unknown individuals In the chaos the bindings and power dampeners malfunctioned, allowing Erik and others to break free. He instantly freed Marie who urged him to help the others who had not gotten out of their bindings yet. Hesitant to do so just wanting to return home, he relented. While escaping they came across several Balancers, but managed to suppress them with their powers and get away. Distancing themselves from the strange moving facility as quickly as they could, Erik feared the worst. Feared being hunted down, feared having placed his family back at home in danger. Marie comforted him, resolving his fears by telling him she got into the minds of those that were there and erased them from their minds, or rather erased their appearance from their minds. This event would however temporarily kill Erik's fantasy of being a super hero, viewing his dream as little more than a nightmare. He continued training with his abilities though now, it was out of self preservation. He wasn't certain how full proof Marie's wipe was and needed to be ready in case any of those strange individuals came after him again.

During his junior year in high school they received a new student, it was Marie. Initially he strove to keep his distance from her, fearing they were still being watched despite her assurances. In time the wall he had built between them would crumble and the two even began to date.

Reborn from Tragedy​

A few years after graduating college, he and Marie had finally married. Marie had become the light of his world, and had brought out the best in him. The two had shared what their abilities were with one another, and while Marie's telepathic abilities were off putting she had promised to never use her powers to pry into his mind, stating if she wanted to know anything she would just ask and trust him to tell her the truth. In college he majored in engineering while Marie focused in social science. She spent much of her time volunteering in hospitals and other facilities and discreetly used her abilities to help those she could. She told Erik that they didn't need to be superheroes to help people, and while what she did worried him, he felt that she was far more of a hero than he could ever be. Within the first year of their marriage, Marie had become pregnant exciting both of them. Erik had slight worries, certain that the child would be born with special abilities like them, but his worries washed away whenever he saw Marie. Having started work at Axxis Corp, a place he had interned at during college, he found new resolve to try and advance the corporate ladder hoping to be able to better provide for his growing family.

Several years prior the government had presented The Fold on national television, a group of super powered individuals officially sanctioned and thus allowed to use their abilities to protect the people. While this seemed good on the surface, it also presented the underlying issue that wasn't being said; the government was implementing a means of controlling who could and could not use their abilities and was creating a divide between people that would inevitably lead to further discrimination.

One day there was an incident or rather, multiple incidents that forced members of The Fold to be dispatched in various parts of America, leaving Prism City essentially vulnerable. Marie who was three months pregnant was making her rounds through Prism Medical Center (PMC), one of the local hospitals. While siphoning the pain from a young child there was a synchronized attack on three areas in the city, the hospital swept up in the mess. The city quickly became chaotic, and many lives were lost. Marie who was at the hospital in the time while physically unharmed, found herself bombarded by the pain of the hundreds around her, their fear, their deaths, all drawn into her. While the S.T.F managed to eventually step in and help stabilize things the damage was already done, and the pain that Marie had inadvertently taken in had also caused her to have a miscarriage.

The pain of the loss of their first child together was nearly unbearable. Marie blamed herself, apologizing to Erik who had constantly warned her to be careful while he consoled her ensuring her it wasn't her fault and that she did nothing wrong, all while blaming himself for not having been at her side. In his grief his anger began shifting towards the individuals who had coordinated the attack, supposedly under the orders of those that would make up The Dark Trifecta, the government for making it difficult for those with variants to act in fear of being locked up, and The Fold who wasn't there to stop it. It took months for the two to work through their grief, and at the end of it Erik had come to a conclusion. The Fold wasn't a hero group for Prism City, they were dogs leashed and led by the government. What would happen the next time they were sent out somewhere to save others, who here would protect those who couldn't protect themselves? Despite the city's beauty it was a jungle, an ecosystem and every ecosystem had a pecking order, a food chain with an apex predator at the top. Erik decided that he should become just that, but he couldn't do it alone. Knowing how much Marie loved helping others and the good that was in her, he knew that she would be able to keep him in check when his anger would try to take over, she would balance him. With resolve to stop others facing a similar tragedy, they would become heroes, they'd become the experts needed for resolving crisis's as Safeguard.

Marie Turner
formerly Marie Diez, is the wife of Erik Turner. Marie works as a social worker contracted to the Prism City Medical Center, where she is loved by staff and patients alike. She is revered as a Saintess of sorts for not only her kind heart but the way she is able to calm almost anyone. After the loss of her unborn child, she was convinced by her husband to join him in the fight against crime, taking on the name Foresight.

PERSONALITY

Her husband would describe her as everything he is not. Marie is a kind soul, warm and friendly to others with a bright and energetic personality. She is rarely seen without a smile on her face, constantly radiating a warmth that is practically infectious. This causes others to love her, and has even caused many to jokingly refer to her as Saintess. It has been her nature since she was a child, as if all that was good in the world was personified into a single woman; her. Despite how kind and warm and gentle she is, Marie is not infallible, something she constantly tells others.

Marie has told her husband how hard it is to see all the sufferinsg in the world around them, to see others in pain, to hurt herself and still choose to smile and see the good in life, revealing that it is not something that always comes easy to her. While she chooses to se the light in the world, she battles with her own feelings of self doubt, propelling her on this almost suicidal campaign to help others and heal the world to the detriment of herself. To this end she walks the halls of the hospital, visiting the various rooms taking on the suffering of others, keeping all the pain bottled in. After the loss of their child, she and her husband channeled their grief in different ways. For him, violence became the outlet under the guise of helping and protecting others, while for her it was the increased rate in which she absorbed the pain of others, drowning out her own pain with theirs.


POWERS & ATTRIBUTES

  • Empathy: The Variant awakened within Marie grants her the ability to perceive, manipulate and absorb the emotions of others. This ability is not limited to just people, but extends to beings such as animals as well. In her everyday life she typically uses this ability to absorb the pain others are feeling to grant them relief. As Foresight, while in combat she applies this ability offensively, amplifying the feeling of "pain" from her punch, giving the illusion that her strength is far greater than it actually is. Conversely, the feelings from others can also affect her, causing her to potentially become more aggressive, happy or sad.
  • Emotion Negation: Using her abilities, she is able to seal the emotions in others, rendering them apathetic. This is an ability that can also be used internally, allowing her to shut off her own emotions. When doing so she is indifferent, calculative and pragmatic, causing others to perceive certain decisions of hers to be cruel and heartless as a result. It is something she is not prone to do, feeling great regret over her actions and words when she is allowed to feel again.
  • Empathic Healing: Aiding her greatly in her civilian career is her ability to absorb the mental, emotional, and physical pain of others, granting them relief and speeding up their recovery. This however comes as a detriment to herself, as while they are feeling relief, she is taking on all the pain and discomfort into herself, albeit temporarily.
  • Psychic Link: Marie has formed a mental bond between her and her husband, allowing the two to communicate through their minds and to be able to gauge one another's positions. Marie is able to form such a link with others. This also allows her to perceive the world through the perception of another.
  • Psionics: Marie is one of the world's foremost telepaths, able to read the minds of others, projecting a mental image of herself within their minds to traverse their thoughts and dreams. This allows her to retrieve almost any information she so desires save from the strongest of minds. She is also more than capable of wiping one's mind, placing mental locks and restraints on the minds of others, sealing off certain memories and in the case of Outliers, access to their abilities as well. She is equally capable of trapping one within their own mind, living them in a coma-like vegetative state. Because she knows the weight of her power and as a kind and gentle soul by nature, she is never seen using her abilities in the horrific ways she could. She has also made a vow to both herself and her husband to never read his mind. Through her variant she is able to cloak herself and others, render a person physically immobile, and control another.
  • Illusion Casting: Using her empathic and psionic abilities, Marie can conjure vivid illusions that seem to affect all five senses of an individual while also affecting their perception of time. She is able to cast and maintain these illusions in multiple people at once with each illusion being tailor made for the individual(s) in question. Her ability extends to being able to alter her appearance and the appearance of others, to even creating illusionary clones.
  • Flight: Marie is capable of flight, able to maintain herself in the air and travel at varying speeds.
  • Energy Projection: Marie can fire off yellow projectile blasts that while capable of blowing back enemies and causing concussive damage, can cause mental damage as well, assaulting a person's mind directly on impact.

  • Hand-to-Hand Combat (Basic): Under her husband's tutelage, she's acquired the basic abilities to allow her to be capable of defending herself.
  • Multilingualism: Being Puerto Rican, Marie is naturally capable of speaking both English and Spanish fluently. Through her variant she has also used to to learn, German, Japanese, French, Korean, and Mandarin.

  • Foresight Suit: Her suit which is compose of a mesh weave of Superium with a piece of Primordion embedded in it. It serves to not only protect her, but to ensure her suit repairs itself and also aids in her healing should she sustain injury in combat.

PERSONALITY

Joseph was as average as average gets. He works his shift at the hardware store, comes home, streams the latest hit show everyone is talking about and goes to sleep to repeat it all again. However, despite machine like habits he is a decent person at his core, decent being the word of choice since all those born in Hexington City have a twinge of madness about them. This madness within Joseph manifests itself in a strange way as he is able to make tough decisions with relative ease and little to no thought about it. If faced with the dilemma of killing one to save hundreds that one would be dead before anyone else has a chance to grasp the situation. It is tendencies like this that make him seem like a lunatic, traits that are only amplified when becoming the Avatar of Azathoth, Occultist.

As Occultist Joseph feels free, as he should since his madness is externalized in the form of his costume. While out delivering "justice" or doing the "right" thing he pulls no punches and can be as brutal as he is able to be with no restraint. Within Hexington City his behavior is seen as "normal" but when outside of it he is viewed as a mad man. Those who encounter him and live are left in a mentally debilitated state, muttering, or ranting about things unseen and unknowable. Despite his brutality and mad man tendencies he has a sound mind for combat, using deception and trickery to his advantage when the typical head on brawl fails him.

Occultist is also very much so aware of the fact that his powers, and by proxy himself, are the key to awakening Azathoth which would blink reality out of existence where the Old God ever to awaken. The more magic he uses, from the general pool of Eldritch Spells or the unique spells granted to him as Azathoth's Avatar, will slowly rouse he great deity awake. How much he would need to expel is unknown but because of this he is careful when casting spells which makes this mad man all the more methodical when using it.


POWERS & ATTRIBUTES

Eldritch Strength: By being an Avatar of an Old God Occultist is "blessed" with tremendous strength. As explained to him he should view this strength as natural since he himself is now an Eldritch being. Not all threats will require the use of his magic, sometimes a simple feat of strength is enough to subdue or eliminate a target. While he cannot topple skyscrapers with his strength he can most certainly make them quake if he were to strike one. When used on smaller targets he is capable of sending them flying back if they lack the resilience to rally themselves after such a hit.

Eldritch Body/Durability: Another "blessing" given to him by becoming an Avatar of an Old God. Occultist is unsure if his durability is based on magic or if his actual biology has changed into that of an Eldritch being. The true answer to this question, which escapes Occultist, is that his biology is indeed changed. He is able to survive incredible drops, explosions, and can trade punches with some of the heaviest hitters the planet has to offer. Just as he should view his strength as natural he should also view his durability in the same light. But with it being natural it also means he can't escape injury completely as he is prone to bleeding, internal bleeding, damaged organs and bones and with the only way to heal himself or accelerate his healing being spells he can be put out of commission for quite some time if the beating is sever enough. This durability does allow him to survive with ghastly injuries, be it gaping holes in his body or having half his body vaporized. While he can survive them it does not mean he can function, when he has such injuries his focus is shifted to healing spells to rebuild himself. Just like the Old Gods these Avatars represent, they are hard to kill.

ABILITIES
Eldritch Spells: Occultist has access to a myriad of Eldritch themed spells, from typical things such as Eldritch Blast, healing spells, to more advance level spells that allows him to walk through the dreams of other beings. He casts these spells by speaking the tongue of the Old Gods, a form of speech so old and guttural that no known translations for it exist on Earth.

Eldritch Rituals: The Rituals of Eldritch nature are typically performed in order to summon something, a part of something, or bestow something. What it is being conjured is almost always unknown, it was just such a ritual that gave Joseph his powers to make him into Occultist. With the nature of these Rituals being so unknown Occultist typically does not dabble in them unless the situation is dire where he must gamble that the unknow chooses to aid instead of harm or make things worse. He has knowledge of various methods of summoning, but like all other Avatars, he lacks the knowledge on how to create an Avatar, the secret to that is guarded by the Old Gods, jealously.

Azathoth Magics: Every Avatar has access to a unique group of spells linked to their Deity they represent. These spells are powerful, and very potent in their effects. Azathoth's spells are dangerous as they tend to warp reality or even summon parts of the great Deity into our reality. Where normal spells and rituals wont do much to rouse this god awake, casting his brand of spells will certainly speed up the process. Occultist will only ever use these spells if he feels like he is at his wits end, there will be no planning, no grand strategy to be paired with such spells either. When he casts a spell from Azathoth's "book" he seeks only certain oblivion of whoever is standing in front of him.

PARAPHERNALIA

Madness Mantle (Occultist Costume): The costume Joseph dons when he becomes Occultist is born from his madness. Any and all madness that resides within him bubbles to the surface and covers him, becoming a clear projection of his own insanity. This costume offers no physical benefits, outside of the "cape" acting as an extra set of limbs, but instead acts as a second skin to guard against magical and energy based attacks. Its strength against said attacks is determined by how crazed Joseph is, his sanity also affects the appearance of his costume. Since it still appears in a "human shape" he is not too far gone, unlike other Avatars who take on more monstrous forms when donning their Madness Mantles.
  • Sanity Draining: The Madness Mantle has the ability to drain sanity from other beings to empower itself. This is done in various ways depending on the Avatar. Occultist prefers to either directly grab his victim by the head to drain their sanity or use his "cape" to ensnare them.
  • Living Cape: The cape of Occultist is more of an extra appendage that comes with his costume. For Occultist in particular it behaves like tendrils that grab and pull items or victims to the mouth, that mouth being Occultist himself. The strength of this Living Cape is about half of his Eldritch Strength which is still plenty of power to catch large objects thrown at him if his hands are occupied or to hoist up multiple victims at a time.
  • Teleportation: All Avatars possess the ability to teleport to places of "affinity" by wrapping themselves up in their Living capes. These places of affinity can be their home, work, any place they frequent often becomes marked as their "territory" so to speak. To take advantage of this someone would have to watch an Avatar while they are going about their everyday life, if they choose to live as humans that is. Avatars are also able to teleport directly to their patron Deity, regardless if they are slumbering or not. Some Avatars, like Occultist, will take their victims to their Deity to let them look upon it to drive them mad. It is a brand of torture that is uniquely devised by the Avatars.


HISTORY

Joseph Taylor was born in Hexington City and lived a relative normal life, he never became an Outlier or delt with criminal activity. His mundane life continued into his adulthood where he got work as a employee at the local hardware store which saw him completing various tasks from being a clerk, stocking shelves, etc. He made a few friends at the job but never bothered to hangout with them outside of work and with him living such a reclusive life it made him an easy target for a cult. A few of his coworkers liked to spend their free time participating in cult activities, particularly those of the Eldritch variety. This cult had gotten their hands on a sacred grimoire that is said to "give power to the laid down life." They interpreted this as a living sacrifice must be made and Joseph became that sacrifice.

His coworkers constantly tried to get him to go out with them for drinks or get togethers but they often failed in the process. Just when they were about to give up they tried one last time and got Joseph to agree to go to a bar with them. Sadly, this would be the last night of Joseph's human life. One spiked drink later the humble, mundane, Joseph finds himself strapped down to the ground, various candles burning around him and strange symbols on the floor beneath him. The ritual progresses and Joseph is slain with a ritualistic blade, then things are silent for a brief time until a surge of energy blasts forth, not from any of the cultist but from Joseph! A black substance covers his body as he stumbles about knocking over candles, setting cultist robes on fire which spreads to the entire warehouse they were secluded in. The fire is intense and burns hot enough to bring down its decaying structure on top of those who couldn't escape.

However something rises from the flaming rubble, like an Eldritch Phoenix. The black substance finally taking shape into a proper form Joseph Taylor ceases to exist in this moment and the world is greated with its newest Anti-Hero...

Doctor Zhalianna Azikiwe, known as Zhali by those in her personal life is one of Prism City's foremost Psychotherapist. A product of the Safe Haven Orphanage, Zhali prides herself in being a symbol and example of overcoming odds and forging an identity of your own, even when you're uncertain of who you are or where you come from. During the Trifecta's attack on the city causing much loss of life, it is her help which inadvertently pushes the Turner's into heroism. Quickly ascertaining who the heroes were from their mannerisms. Initially attempting to dissuade them from this path she found herself a reluctant ally at first, choosing to ensure the couple's mental stability while donning their uniforms, doing so as Aspect.


PERSONALITY

Calm, charming and inquisitive one would be hard pressed to find anyone who has a negative word to be said about the Psychotherapist. Never one to raise her voice in anger, in fact there isn't anyone who can recall ever actually seeing her get angry, a fact causing many to confide in her and many more to respect her. Valued for her brilliant mind and strong almost iron clad will, it is she who Lawyers, Judges and others in authority come to for her input regarding analyzing the psyche of others from criminals to even officers after a traumatic incident, while she is by no means the only Psychotherapist in the City, all roads seem to lead to her office one way or another regardless.

This image of strength and perfection, though true aspects of herself are merely just that. Though she does not show her anger, it is constantly there beneath the surface. Very few know the amount of willpower and mental control it takes for her to keep from lashing out, to keep the flames of her anger at bay. Her control over her emotions and herself comes not out of an act of professionalism, but out of necessity. When her variant first surfaced she saw first hand the dangers that came with it. Emotions made manifest outside of her in forms most destructive forced the good doctor to take up meditation and seek therapy for herself; efforts to keep her other selves contained within her. Having many peoples lives and mental wellbeing entrusted to her, Zhali takes her job as a Psychotherapist seriously, yet she takes her identity as an Outlier even more seriously. She recognizes that should her powers run rampant out of her control it would undo all the good she has done and any good she could do, especially with the very reasonable fears and uncertainty regarding people with abilities. It is because of this that she became angered at Erik Turner, a patient of hers, when she quickly learned that he had been galivanting as a "hero" after attending only a handful of sessions with her. She perceived his actions as reckless knowing he had not properly healed from the pain and trauma of his loss and was using these heroics as little more as an outlet, something she deemed unhealthy for his still broken self. After revealing to Mr. Turner that like him, she too was an Outlier explaining to him the importance of people like them controlling themselves hoping that he would see reason was taken aback when rather backing down he asked her to join and help them instead.

While reluctant she eventually conceded, something she isn't known to do and admittedly found pleasure in being able to make actual use of her abilities. As Aspect she finds freedom in not being the reserved and tranquil therapist she must be during her civilian life, coming to better accept that portion of herself and understanding the nature of her abilities. She joins the Turners in their battle against criminals, while also serving as their inhouse therapist, keeping the team honest with not only each other but themselves as well.


POWERS & ATTRIBUTES

  • Empathic Clones: Zhali's particular Variant manifested in the form of clones of herself, specifically elemental clone. Each body adopts her physical shape and height while composed entirely of a particular element, and each clone's element corresponds to one of her emotions or state of mind. Currently, Zhali only has access to a total of four separate elemental bodies, but after diagnosing and assessing herself she theorized that there may be others that she has yet to unlock or encounter. Zhali is able to partially or fully manifest these separate bodies from herself, though they are limited to a certain range from herself. She practices diligently not only to maintain control over these reflections of herself, but to extend their range of travel as well. Regardless of their distance from her a natural psionic link ensures they remain tethered to her main body, able to be recalled at a moment's notice.
    • Red Aspect of Fury: The first of her Empathic Clones to manifest, it is a body composed entirely of living fire and is also the embodiment of her anger and frustration. Fueled by her anger, the temperature around her rises in accordance to her rage causing water to boil, and her surroundings to catch aflame. It is her most used and summoned body, a fact that by her own admittance speaks volumes to who she truly is. As Aspect, Zhali is capable of robing herself in the living flames of her alter-self, wearing her as one might a suit of armor. This allows Zhali to use her flame abilities directly, taking flight, firing off blasts of intense flames and creating other flame based constructs. As this alter is a manifestation of her anger, its flames intensity rise and wane based upon her anger.
    • Blue Aspect of Melancholy: What she calls her sensitive side, this blue-alter embodies her sorrow, her fears and doubts. Its body is composed of dark and chilling waters. When robed in the living waters of this body she is able to conjure bursts of pressurized water, altering the watery limbs into a variety of shapes and forms for combat.
    • Green Aspect of Joy: A body that embodies her playfulness and mischievousness. It is the form that represents her free self, unbound by responsibility and duty, sweeping away everything that would distract her from her amusements with heavy winds. While one may assume this is the safest of her personalities, it is in fact one of the most dangerous ones. Not bound by inhibitions, all it knows is to act on impulse, actions that would bring it any manner of amusement even to the detriment of others. When wearing the green-alter, Zhali is granted flight and the ability to conjure up fierce and terrible storms, walls of wind, and balls of air.
    • Purple Aspect of Pride: Strong and fierce, bold and electric, her personality manifests itself as living lightning. Every act is swift and certain, the powerful bolts and streams of electricity emboldened by her ego and self confidence, which she has in spades. Adorning this body of living lightning not only allows her to fire off powerful blasts of electricity, but also grants her the ability of flight and heightened reflexes and speed as well.
  • Flight: Zhali is capable of flight through any one of three of her four elemental mediums.

PERSONALITY

Devin is a man of patience and of rationale, bordering the extreme to some. When faced with a problem or, even a simple question he tends to over think and over analyze it, seemingly incapable of providing a simple answer in response, and instead spiraling into a drawn out explanation on his thought process, as he verbally works through the question. As annoying as this is, once he has finished more often than not, the conclusion he has come to is typically a viable and helpful response. Due to his upbringing he values family, friendships and possesses a strong sense of justice and life. While he would prefer peace, he acknowledges that there are those who commit evil because they themselves are inherently evil, something that runs counter to all he has learned in his studies. While cordial to everyone he meets there are very few who actually trusts, never truly sharing his most guarded of thoughts and feelings with others, though its unknown if this is something he consciously does or not.

His upbringing, his studies in medicine and the human mind, his time as a soldier all coalesced into making him the symbol he would come to be once his friend, Stephanie Hawkes was killed. When wearing the mask he is methodical, cold and calculating, eerily calm and very efficient. As Devin he is a man of intellect, patience and peace, but as Nocturne his intellect and patience are instead weaponized for violence. His professionalism bleeds into this other life, something he chooses to lean into rather abstain from, adding to the unsettling air about him. As Devin he is a proponent for peace, where as Nocturne he does not shy away from almost any level of violence.

In both of his personas he has a strong distrust in the city's Law Enforcement, very well aware of the corruption that runs rampant through the BHPD, holding various Institutions in equal levels of distrust and disdain. He constantly wrestles with thoughts of rather or not the city can ever truly be cured of the sickness known as corruption, violence, and crime that plagues it.

Bio Cognition: Like many others on Earth, Devin was affected by Panacea receiving a variant. Devin's variant allows him to analyze subconscious signals — breathing, heart rate, scent, micro-expressions, etc. at a heightened level to detect stress and a person's intent to a degree. It makes him incredibly effective in combat, able to predict attacks and a persons actions fairly accurately to a heightened degree. Outside of combat, Devin uses it for more investigative purposes, treating it as a pseudo-lie detector as he is able to discern when a person is lying, hiding something, or being deceptive. It has proved valuable in his career as he is able to tell if a person is sick/ill, even if they themselves are unaware of this.

Plague Flies: Nanobots designed to mimic flies in appearance. These nanobots serve to widen his field of surveillance through them, capable of recording video and sound and are able to link with his goggles to show what they are seeing through the feed. They are also capable of interfering with other electrical devices such as computers, cameras and locks, and can administer various chemicals.

•Smoke Gloves: His gloves are designed to be able to release various gasses through the fingertips.
Fear Gas:
A special gas that causes those affected to hallucinate, seeing things made to draw upon their fears and traumas.
•Tear Gas: Gas that causes one to choke, and eyes to tear up inhibiting vision, an affect that lingers even when leaving from the cloud of gas.
•Smokescreen: Dark smoke that blocks out a persons field of vision.
•Knockout gas: A gas that causes a person to become drowsy and ultimately lose consciousness.
•Hallucinogenic gas: Unlike the fear gas, this gas seems to cause a person to see any variety of things. A psychedelic in gas form.
•Fluorescent gas: Gas that is made to work with blacklight within the goggles, used to expose things like blood or other bodily fluids.

•Grappling Launcher: Hidden within either wrist, are hidden cords that can be fired and used to scale walls or buildings. These cords can also send an electrical current through them.

•Plague Goggles: The goggles in his mask are made to be able to filter through a variety of visual options such as, infrared, x-ray, night vision, and UV.

•Scalpels: As Nocturne, Devin has weaponized medical scalpels, altering them to be used more like throwing knives than surgical tools, yet able to use them with equal precision.

•Plague Mask: The mask serves to aid in hiding his identity, as well as granting him protection from certain chemicals and gases, not dissimilar from the purpose of the plague masks in history. The mask is also equipped with a voice modulator.

•Plague Suit: The suit he wears does more than hide his identity, but serves as a layer of protection. The special kevlar weave made to defend against low caliber rounds and bladed attacks to a degree.

•Hidden Blade: Within his boots are hidden retractable blades, usually housed near the toe area of the boots.

•Medkit: His belt that houses any number of tools and items used to perform his duties as Doctor Nocturne.


HISTORY

Born and raised in Blackhaven, after graduating high school much of his life was divided between his time in the military and his schooling. At some point in Devin's life, he briefly did an internship within Hexington, which is where he would reconnect with a childhood friend, Stephanie Hawkes. Having lost touch over the years, learning of her mental health issues he became concerned and took it upon himself to look after her best he could. When it was time for him to leave Hexington, he made arrangements to have her sent to Blackhaven, believing the medical facilities there would be better equipped to help her, as well as allowing him to better help her as well. Contrary to the assumptions of many, the relationship between the two was never romantic, each one valuing the company and friendship of the other. Devin's trajectory in life had long since made him more rational and practical, while Stephanie delved into the romanticism of fantasy and comic books, falling in love with the heroes in such stories, always telling Devin how she viewed him as her hero.

A brilliant psychologist, it is this same brilliance that placed him in positions to aid certain law enforcement agencies as a contracted behavioral analyst, assisting in drawing up frighteningly accurate criminal profiles for suspects. Despite his high level of success, and his repeated use by local law enforcement, the courts system in Blackhaven often saw those he helped to testify against or even locate based on his profile, released or given a lighter sentence than expected. Often seeing how the various corporations and even the Mega Don seemed to hold greater sway over the courts than the actual law, constitution or justice did he questioned what the point of his continued involvement was.

Devin would come to leave the city due to a seminar he was meant to attend. While away Stephanie, still battling with her mental health would have an episode, prompting her to attack an officer. Unaware of what she had done, while it was clear she was not mentally competent at the time and thus not responsible for her actions, her mental competency was ignored and she was locked up. With Devin absent, there was no one to properly help her, to speak for her and the one person she relied on was unable to help calm and reassure her. While in general population, Stephanie would be brutally attacked by an unknown assailant, with a message left in her blood. It is only a month later that Devin returned to Blackhaven, unaware of what had happened a colleague had informed him. Devin immediately went to speak with officers who confirmed her death, showing a picture to him. The picture was of the scene of the crime, Stephanie's body covered by a white sheet, with blood seeping through. His eyes focused on the message near the body, written in blood that read; Sorry Doc :[

Angered at the fact that she had been locked up like some common criminal instead of getting her actual help, that no one had attempted to contact him, and at the disbelief that they were unable to find her killer, something inside him had broken. He was angry, he not only wanted to get her justice, but needed to. He knew he'd find no actual help through the courts or the local cops. He thought of Stephanie, her smile, her innocence and her love of heroes, and how she often called him her hero, something that caused the grief and guilt in him to only grow stronger. He had failed to be her hero when she needed him the most in life, but he could become her hero in death by finding her killer and bringing them to justice, one way or another.

As a doctor, he took an oath to do no harm. He would take a new oath as another type of doctor, one that would be far more effective in treating the disease killing this city and those in it.

PERSONALITY

Derek is an eccentric busy body, always on the move, always asking questions even if they can get him in trouble. When tackling a case he is always open to things others are skeptic to, like the supernatural or occult. Growing up in Hexington is what gave rise to this way of thinking, seeing things that can't be explained away as a mere Outlier ability. Combining that with the cities mysterious history he is possibly the only detective on the force who isn't quick to blame an Outlier for something catastrophic happening.

He has an amazing attention to detail, including how someone speaks to him or how they write. With how he keeps his eye on supernatural happenings he has learned how to crack various ciphers and written codes. Morse code can be read with a glance and understood easily when hearing it as well. This may make him seem like a super detective but he is far from such a thing, just like a handy man with many tools is not a master handy man. He has acquired these traits over time and puts them to use when needed to help him piece together a more grand picture. But the mysterious haze of Hexington always brings him, and many other detectives, to a standstill in a case.

The man is also quick witted enough to talk himself out of most situations, stall someone with words, or distract them. While the term, "silver tongue devil" would fit him perfectly he only ever uses it to get what he needs for a case, or get himself out of a situation he has mistakenly put himself in. All in all Derek is a well rounded man out to do good in an evil city whose rot extends beyond the humans who control it.

ABILITIES

Analytical Nature:
Derek's ability to analyze a scene and pick up on small details makes him a sight for sore eyes on any crime scene. He'll sift through debris until he finds something that doesn't sit well with him, much like how he found the bent chains used by Deface in Occultist #3. So long as he is given the proper tools he can analyze and decipher most things set before him. However, at the end of the day he is still human and while he could be capable of deciphering Eldritch text he would have to do so at great cost to his sanity, which would lead to Hexington losing one of its greatest detectives.

HISTORY

Derek was born and raised in Blackhaven but raised in Prism City. After graduating high school in Prism City he moved to Hexington for a small stint in college before enrolling in the police academy where he met the love of his life, Patricia Robinson. They married after graduating the Police Academy and soon after had a child together. They were living the dream everyone wishes to live, a wholesome home, stable income, etc. Shortly after Derek was promoted to Detective his wife was killed in the line of duty when answering a 911 call for help in a suburban neighborhood. Being one of the first to show up on the scene she was brutally killed by what the precinct still believes to be an Outlier. Whoever or whatever killed her left Derek widowed and their at the time 10 year old son motherless.

He has not given up on looking for her killer, when afforded the time to do so he pours over evidence from various cases labeled as "massacres". He has been connecting the dots over the past four years and he feels like he is finally on the heels of his wife's killer. As of Occultist #3 Derek may finally be on the final stretch to discover who killed the love of his life, hopefully this obsession doesn't claim his life as well.
